Online Sports Betting Bill Signed Into Law by North Carolina Governor

On July 16th, 2021, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper signed a bill that legalizes online sports betting in the state. This move makes North Carolina the latest state to join the growing list of states that have legalized sports betting.

The bill, which was passed by the North Carolina General Assembly in June, allows for online sports betting to be conducted through the state’s two tribal casinos: Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort in Cherokee and Harrah’s Cherokee Valley River Casino & Hotel in Murphy. The casinos will be allowed to offer online sports betting through their own websites or mobile apps.

The bill also allows for in-person sports betting at the two casinos, as well as at off-track betting facilities and sports stadiums. However, it does not allow for betting on college sports teams from North Carolina or any other state.

The legalization of online sports betting is expected to bring in millions of dollars in revenue for the state. According to a study by Eilers & Krejcik Gaming, North Carolina could see up to $380 million in annual revenue from sports betting.

In addition to the revenue generated from sports betting, the bill also includes provisions for problem gambling prevention and treatment. The North Carolina Problem Gambling Program will receive funding from the revenue generated by sports betting to provide resources and support for individuals who may be struggling with gambling addiction.

The legalization of online sports betting in North Carolina is part of a larger trend across the United States. Since the Supreme Court struck down a federal ban on sports betting in 2018, more than 30 states have legalized sports betting in some form.

However, not everyone is in favor of the legalization of sports betting. Some opponents argue that it can lead to an increase in problem gambling and can have negative social and economic consequences.

Despite these concerns, the legalization of online sports betting in North Carolina is expected to have a positive impact on the state’s economy and provide a new source of revenue for the state. It will also provide sports fans with a new way to engage with their favorite teams and games.
